Chennai, June 3:

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to install solar panels across Metro stations in the city as part of a major push towards green energy and sustainable operations.

The initiative aims to significantly reduce electricity consumption by generating solar power at station rooftops and other available spaces. Officials said the move is expected to lower dependence on conventional power sources, resulting in substantial long-term cost savings.

CMRL is also exploring the integration of solar energy with its existing power systems to improve efficiency and ensure uninterrupted operations. The project aligns with broader efforts to promote eco-friendly public transport and reduce the carbon footprint of urban infrastructure.

Once implemented, the initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency while supporting the State’s renewable energy goals and sustainable development targets.
