Chennai, July 2:

Weeks after forming the government, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and its allies held their first formal meeting to outline the structure of their coalition.

Leaders from Congress, VCK, IUML, and MDMK participated in the discussions, proposing a common minimum programme (CMP) and a coordination committee to ensure stability and smooth governance.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore said the meeting focused on alliance sustainability, coordination mechanisms, and CMP formulation. He also noted that TVK’s entry into the INDIA bloc could be considered once it secures representation in Parliament.

IUML and VCK leaders expressed support for the TVK-led government, highlighting its commitment to secularism, social justice, and corruption-free governance, while MDMK emphasised the need for direct local body elections.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, IUML national president KM Kader Mohideen, and other alliance leaders attended the meeting. CPI and CPM leaders did not participate, maintaining their outside support to the government.
