Chennai, July 7:
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has collected ₹12.25 lakh in fines from builders and developers during a single-day enforcement drive conducted across 12 zones for violations of construction safety and civic regulations.
The crackdown targeted construction sites that failed to comply with norms related to dust pollution control, waste management and overall site safety. Civic officials said the drive forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure stricter adherence to environmental and safety standards.
The highest individual penalty of ₹5 lakh was imposed on a private developer constructing a multi-storey building on Poonamallee High Road in Anna Nagar for repeated violations of civic guidelines.
Among the zones, Anna Nagar recorded the highest penalties at ₹5.75 lakh, followed by Tiruvottiyur with ₹2 lakh and Manali with ₹1 lakh. Enforcement action was also carried out in Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur.
Corporation officials said inspections would continue on a regular basis and warned that builders who fail to comply with construction safety and environmental norms would face stricter legal action and higher penalties.
The GCC reiterated its commitment to maintaining urban standards and ensuring that construction activities do not pose risks to public health or the environment.
