Chennai,Ā  July 8:

The DMK has approached the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee overseeing the CBI probe into the Karur stampede case, seeking legal action against minister Aadhav Arjuna over his recent public remarks on the incident.

The representation comes a day after a partial working day bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices KV Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe, declined to entertain the DMK’s plea challenging Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s proposed July 10 visit to Karur. The party had also alleged that ministers from the ruling TVK were attempting to influence witnesses in the case.

In its petition to the monitoring committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, DMK organising secretary RS Bharathi alleged that Arjuna’s statements—blaming the then DMK government, former Chief Minister MK Stalin, and the police for the tragedy—could prejudice the ongoing court-monitored investigation.

The party urged the panel to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to register a case against the minister and examine whether his remarks amounted to influencing witnesses or obstructing the probe.
