Tamil Nadu Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested by police on Tuesday in connection with the controversy over his alleged derogatory remark about actor Trisha during a public rally. He was subsequently taken to Thanjavur for interrogation, officials said.
The arrest follows widespread outrage over comments reportedly made by Udhayanidhi while addressing a protest on the Cauvery issue in Thanjavur. The remark, made in response to slogans raised by the crowd, drew sharp criticism from political leaders, members of the film industry and the public, who termed it inappropriate and offensive.
BJP leaders described the statement as āvulgar and shamefulā and demanded strict action, while several other political figures urged leaders to maintain decorum in public discourse. Critics pointed out that such remarks were unbecoming of someone holding a high public office.
The controversy quickly escalated after videos of the speech circulated widely on social media, triggering intense debate and condemnation. Hashtags related to the issue began trending, with supporters of the actor expressing disappointment and calling for an apology. Civil society groups also emphasised the need for respectful and responsible speech, particularly when addressing large public gatherings.
Police action was initiated following complaints that the remarks were derogatory and hurt sentiments. Security was tightened outside Udhayanidhiās residence prior to his arrest, as party members and supporters gathered in large numbers. He was later moved to Thanjavur for further questioning as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, reactions from the film fraternity have remained largely measured, though some voices have highlighted the importance of dignity and mutual respect in public life. Political observers noted that the controversy has overshadowed key issues such as the Cauvery dispute, diverting attention to the conduct of public figures.
