Air India’s decision to subject all its pilots to mandatory psychoactive substance testing is a welcome step, particularly after the captain of a Phuket-Delhi flight tested positive for marijuana following an incident in which the aircraft suddenly lost altitude. While existing rules require only random testing of a prescribed portion of flight crew, expanding the checks to the entire pilot workforce sends a clear message that aviation safety cannot be compromised. A pilot’s fitness is not merely an individual responsibility; it is a matter involving the lives of hundreds of passengers.

The incident also raises uncomfortable questions about whether regulatory compliance should remain the benchmark for airline safety. Random testing may satisfy the letter of the rules, but modern aviation demands a stronger safety culture built around prevention, transparency and accountability. If psychoactive substances or prohibited medications can affect alertness, judgement or reaction time, airlines must have robust systems to detect and address such risks before they reach the cockpit. At the same time, investigations must be evidence-based and fair, ensuring that a positive test is properly interpreted and that pilots are given due process.

Air India’s expanded testing should therefore not remain a one-time response to a troubling incident. It should become part of a sustained safety programme covering pilots, cabin crew and other safety-critical personnel, backed by counselling, rehabilitation where appropriate and strict enforcement of aviation rules. Passengers place extraordinary trust in airline crews every time they board a flight. That trust can be protected only when airlines demonstrate that safety comes before schedules, reputation or commercial considerations.
