Jeffrey Archer’s death at 86 marks the end of a remarkable literary career that was inseparable from the controversies that accompanied his public life.

His novels, particularly Kane and Abel and Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, made him one of the world’s most widely read storytellers, with more than 300 million copies sold across 119 countries. That extraordinary readership is a reminder of the enduring power of accessible, gripping storytelling.

Yet Archer’s legacy cannot be viewed solely through his literary achievements. His political career, which included service as a Conservative MP and later in the House of Lords, was badly damaged by the legal scandal surrounding his libel case against the Daily Star.

His conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice, followed by a prison sentence, represented a dramatic fall from political prominence. His subsequent return to writing and continued success showed both the resilience of his talent and the ability of popular literature to survive the personal controversies surrounding its creator.

There is an extraordinary final twist to Archer’s story: he died suddenly and peacefully at home between writing sessions, just one day before the publication of Adam and Eve, the novel he had declared would be his last. He had met readers at a sold-out event in London only a day earlier, demonstrating that his connection with his audience remained strong until the end.

Archer leaves behind a complicated legacy — a hugely successful storyteller whose political ambitions ended in disgrace, but whose books continued to find readers across generations and continents.
