Chennai, Oct 23:
Nuclear medicine can play a vital role in diagnosing acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, liver cirrhosis and fatty liver disease, Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said on Thursday.
Delivering the 42nd convocation address at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) in Porur, he highlighted how artificial intelligence, genomics and quantum technologies were transforming healthcare. He noted the growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and coronary artery disease.
Singh said India was among the few countries to open nuclear research to private-sector participation. He also highlighted the SANGAM programme under the National Genomics Data Grid, which aims to sequence around one million genetically diverse Indians and link genomic data with clinical outcomes to advance precision medicine.
He stressed the need to prevent diseases, particularly among young people, to support the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Chancellor V.R. Venkataachalam conferred degrees on 2,116 graduates across medical, engineering and management disciplines and presented 106 gold medals. The institution introduced 12 postgraduate and 14 undergraduate programmes during 2025–26 and signed 25 MoUs with national and international organisations to promote research, healthcare, education and technology.
