Kim Jong Un visits China to inaugurate new cross-border bridge

Beijing, Oct 26:
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited China to inaugurate a new bridge linking the two neighbouring countries, signalling efforts to strengthen economic and political ties amid changing regional dynamics.
Kim visited the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday and attended the inauguration of the New Yalu River Bridge, which connects China with North Korea. The bridge project had been delayed for more than a decade and is expected to facilitate cross-border trade by accommodating round-the-clock traffic, including heavy trucks and container shipments.
During the visit, Kim met senior Chinese Communist Party official Wang Huning, who conveyed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s greetings. Kim also visited a memorial honouring Chinese support for North Korea during the Korean War, underscoring the historical ties between the two countries.
The bridge is expected to improve transport links and provide additional capacity for the movement of goods between the two sides. China remains North Korea’s most important economic partner and a key source of trade and supplies for the isolated country. Improved connectivity could help Pyongyang expand commerce with Beijing at a time when it is seeking to strengthen its external partnerships.
Kim’s visit also comes as North Korea has deepened its ties with Russia in recent years. His latest engagement with China indicates an effort to maintain close relations with both countries as regional security tensions continue.
North Korea has continued to reject renewed negotiations with the United States unless Washington changes what Pyongyang describes as its hostile policies and abandons demands for denuclearisation. The bridge inauguration and Kim’s meetings with Chinese officials are likely to be watched closely for indications of the future direction of bilateral cooperation and regional diplomacy.
