Chennai, Nov 3:

A significant cluster of prehistoric rock art, estimated by archaeological researchers to be roughly 5,000 years old, has been discovered in natural cave shelters in Tamil Nadu.

The archaeological finding provides crucial material evidence regarding early settlement patterns, hunting rituals, and symbolic communication during the transition between the late Mesolithic and Neolithic periods in the region.

Field researchers reported that the paintings, primarily rendered using natural red ochre and white mineral pigments, depict diverse facets of early human life. Among the preserved motifs are stylized anthropomorphic figures, wild fauna, community dancing sequences, and symbolic geometric impressions, offering a rare window into the belief systems and daily routines of ancient inhabitants.

Archaeological experts noted that the choice of high, naturally sheltered rock overhangs protected the rock art from severe weathering and direct rainfall over millennia. The pigmentation composition indicates the sophisticated use of iron oxide ground together with animal fat or plant resins as binding agents, enabling the vibrant rock markings to endure across generations.

Heritage enthusiasts and local historians have appealed to the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to urgently notify the site as a protected monument.

Researchers emphasised that growing footfall and uncontrolled human interference pose severe risks of defacement, calling for immediate fencing, scientific documentation, and conservation measures to preserve the ancient heritage.
