DAKAR, November 6:
India’s Tanvi Patri came agonisingly close to a historic gold medal at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, but had to settle for silver after losing a thrilling girls’ singles badminton final against China’s Zhang Yi Xin in Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday.
The 15-year-old went down 21-15, 13-21, 24-26 in an 82-minute contest that showcased her fighting spirit and ability to compete against the world’s leading junior players. Despite the defeat, Patri created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a badminton medal at the Youth Olympic Games.
The final was a contest of fluctuating momentum, with Patri initially taking control before Zhang mounted a comeback. However, it was the extraordinary third game that transformed the encounter into one of the tournament’s most compelling matches.
Patri began confidently, using her attacking strokes, sharp net play and ability to move her opponent around the court to take the opening game 21-15. Zhang, the reigning world junior champion, responded in the second, improving her defensive consistency and exploiting openings to win 21-13 and force a decider.
The Chinese shuttler appeared firmly in control of the final game, opening up a commanding 19-10 advantage. With the gold medal seemingly within reach, Zhang looked poised to close out the contest.
Patri, however, refused to surrender.
The Indian produced an extraordinary sequence of points, gradually reducing the deficit through more disciplined shot selection and aggressive attacking play. Zhang began to feel the pressure as Patri continued to close the gap, eventually bringing the score level at 24-24.
In the process, Patri saved six match points and created three match-point opportunities of her own, turning what appeared to be a comfortable victory for the Chinese player into a tense battle.
Zhang eventually held her nerve in the closing exchanges, winning the next two points to seal the deciding game 26-24 and secure the gold medal. The narrow margin underlined how close Patri had come to completing one of the most remarkable comebacks of the tournament.
A historic campaign for Indian badminton
Although the gold medal eluded her, Patri’s silver represents a significant milestone for Indian badminton at the Youth Olympic Games.
Before her achievement, H.S. Prannoy had won an individual silver medal at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore in 2010, while Lakshya Sen finished runner-up in the boys’ singles competition at Buenos Aires 2018. Aditya Joshi had also reached the semifinals in 2014.
Patri has now become the first Indian woman to win a badminton medal at the competition, adding another milestone to her rapidly developing career.
Her journey to the final was equally impressive. She defeated Mexico’s Sara Gonzalez and Australia’s Smrithi Adepu in the group stages before overcoming South Korea’s Jeong Yu Jang to progress.
In the quarterfinals, she defeated Thailand’s Kungkaew Kakanik 21-17, 21-13 to secure a historic medal.
