News Today, a newspaper with a proud legacy of over five decades, was founded by T R Ramaswami—TRR—one of the most respected voices in Indian journalism. Known for his fearless writing and sharp intellect, TRR challenged authority through his columns and stood firmly for press freedom.A key figure in journalists’ movements across the country, he held leadership roles in the Indian Federation of Working Journalists, the Madras Union of Journalists and guided the Southern India Journalists Federation. His counsel was sought by national leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Mohan Kumaramangalam and M G Ramachandran, who viewed him as a mentor during the AIADMK’s formative years.
Following TRR, the mantle passed to his son, T R Jawahar. Trained as a chartered and cost accountant, Jawahar’s rise in journalism reflects both destiny and determination. Over the years, he has emerged as one of Chennai’s most prominent journalists. His Point Blank column is widely read for its forthright opinions, delivered with trademark wit and candour.
A connoisseur of Tamil and English cinema, music and poetry, Jawahar is also a history enthusiast, avid reader and keen traveller. His writings blend cultural depth with lived experience, reflecting continuity, clarity and contemporary relevance.
