Lyricist Pulamaipithan

Chennai: Lyricist and AIADMK leader Pulamaipithan passed away this morning at a private hospital in Chennai. He was admitted there recently and was put on life support. He was 85.

Pulamaipithan had written lyrics for leading Kollywood stars including MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.

He was born in Coimbatore in 1935. In the 60s, he came to Chennai with an undying ambition to pen lyrics for songs in Tamil films. His big break came when he wrote the song Naan Yaar Nee Yaar for MGR in his film ‘Kudiyirundha Koyil’ (1968). In his career, he had written over 100 poems in Tamil.

Some of his popular songs in films include Neenga Nalla Irukanum Nadu Munnera, Paadumpothu Nan Thendral Kaatru, Pattuvanna Rosavam, Uchi Vagudeduthu, Nanjai Undu Punjai Undu among others.

His last sing on big screen was for Vadivelu starrer ‘Eli’ in 2015. In 2016, he wrote the lyrics for the song Thaaimai from Vijay’s ‘Theri’. It was sung by Bombay Jayashri.

Pulamaipithan served as the Deputy Chairman of the Tamilnadu Legislative Council and the presidium chairman of the AIADMK.
