Heat wave grips TN: Met dept issues warning

The Meteorological Department issued a stern warning on Thursday, cautioning residents of Tamil Nadu to brace themselves for a prolonged heat wave likely to persist until April 28. In an alarming forecast, certain districts are expected to experience a surge in temperatures beyond the usual range.

A total of 18 districts in Tamil Nadu have been identified as the focal points of this scorching heat wave. These districts include Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Trichy, Ariyalur, and Perambalur. The temperature in these regions is forecasted to escalate by a significant margin, ranging from 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.

Moreover, the situation is set to intensify over the weekend, with a projected increase in temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees Celsius across 24 northern districts, including Tirupathur, Vellore, and Coimbatore.

While the rest of the State is not exempt from the heat wave’s impact, other areas are expected to see maximum temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius.

In light of these concerning developments, the Meteorological Department has also highlighted the potential for sporadic light rain showers in select southern districts of Tamil Nadu. While this may offer temporary relief to some areas, the overarching message remains clear: residents are urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate the adverse effects of the impending heat wave.

Authorities are advising citizens to stay indoors during peak daytime hours, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, are especially encouraged to take extra precautions.
