Chennai: The two-leaves symbol stays with the AIADMK with the Delhi High Court ruling in its favour this afternoon. It has upheld the Election Commission granting the famed symbol to the AIADMK.
It rejected the two pleas filed by Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader T T V Dhinakaran and his aunt and general secretary of the party, V K Sasikala, against granting the two-leaves symbol of the AIADMK to the Edappadi K Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam-led faction.
Appearing for Sasikala and Dhinkaran, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that Palaniswami and Panneerselvam had no locus standi to remove them from the AIADMK. He said the Election Commission of India, due to political compulsions, had ruled in favour of the AIADMK and did not give enough time for Sasikala-Dhinakaran to present all documents.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Palaniswami and Panneerselvam, placed counter-arguments and defended the action of the Election Commission. He said the commission had given enough opportunities for both sides to present their case and had allotted the symbol to AIADMK only after that.
After the arguments concluded 8 February, the judges reserved judgement without announcing the date of delivery of the verdict. They had indicated that they will try to deliver the judgement in four weeks’ time.
