Chennai: Actor Radha Ravi, a DMK member, who created a social media storm with his offensive and derogatory remarks about actress Nayanthara at a teaser launch function has been suspended from the party.

According to a statement signed by DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan, Radha Ravi has been suspended from the primary membership of the party and divested of other responsible positions for going against the party’s ethos and bringing a bad name to it.

Radha Ravi had made a derogatory speech against Nayanthara, who is now being labelled as Lady Superstar, during the release of the teaser of her film – where she was not present.

DMK president M K Stalin has also strongly condemned in a tweet Radha Ravi’s speech and has warned his party cadres and leaders from speaking ill of women. He said the actor’s statements about an actress are unacceptable by the DMK which gives importance to women’s rights.

He urged his party members to express their thoughts in a responsible way and that action would be taken against those who cross the limits.

For his part, after coming under this mountain of flak, Radha Ravi said he would quit the party if it was being affected because of him.

He apologised for his comments about Nayanthara and said he had been misunderstood.
