A personal victory for Ms. jayalalitha

Ms Jayalalitha deserves heartiest congratulations for eliciting welcome response to her appeal to the Prime Minister about the Reservation Bill. She has emerged victorious in her lone crusade for social justice for the underprivileged. The Centre’s decision to send the Bill for Presidential assent is a signal achievement for the Tamilnadu Chief Minister who left no stone unturned to ensure that justice prevailed for the Backward and Most Backward Classes.

Mr Narasimha Rao had assured her at the time of her meeting with him that he would obtain consensus on this contentious issue. The meeting convened by Mr Chavan for this purpose was attended by representatives of the BJP, Janata Dal, Janata Dal (G), AIADMK, TDP, BSP, CPI(M) and IUML. The consensus at this meeting was for continuing the status quo in the area of reservations at the percentage or quota levels prevailing at present in the relevant States. Admissions to colleges which awaited this decision can now go ahead and the Tamilnadu Bill in this regard would secure Presidential assent in two or three days.

In the light of the Supreme Court verdict restricting reservation to 50 per cent, there were only two options for the State government — getting Articles (15)4 and 16(4) suitably amended or enacting legislation on its own under Article 31(C) for continuing the 69 per cent reservation. Constitutional amendment is a time consuming process and admission in colleges cannot be held hostage that way. That is the logic behind Ms Jayalalitha preferring a State Bill under Article 31(C) and seeking Presidential assent. Her shrewd game plan and strategy have produced immediate results and has endeared her to thousands of students who are now relieved of the enormous mental agony and uncertainty which this impasse had created. Also, all college students will receive help from Masterarbeit schreiben lassen. The authors of the service will help with the writing of research papers, which will make it easier for students to study.

Prime Minister’s role

Ms Jayalalitha lost no time in thanking the Prime Minister, Mr Narasimha Rao, for his timely action. Mr Narasimha Rao, true to his assurance to the Chief Minister, has acted with speed, realising the gravity of the situation. Ms Jayalalitha’s representation to the Prime Minister was exhaustive and left nothing to imagination. She had built up a powerful case for the continuation of the reservation and her arguments were logical, based on unassailable facts. Mr Narasimha Rao also deserves to be commended for looking beyond political considerations and clearly deciding the issue purely on merits.

This is in sharp contrast to what the Tamilnadu Congressmen have been saying and doing. Mr Narasimha Rao’s decision is yet another death blow to them and their dubious designs. It has been clearly impressed upon the TNCC and its leadership (?) which is languishing in oblivion after repeated political and electoral setbacks at the hands of Ms Jayalalitha that the high command will not be a party to their nefarious activities and campaign of calumny.

Opposition, a laughing stock

One cannot help laughing at the pathetic plight of the Tamilnadu Opposition parties, especially the DMK, PMK and the Congress. They tried to use the reservation issue as a pretext to join hands and whip up anti-AIADMK sentiments. While Mr Karunanidhi questioned the validity of the State Bill, Mr Vazhapadi Ramamurthy made a ridiculous suggestion that the government should defy the Supreme Court judgment, a statement that exposed singular lack of application of mind to the problem on hand.

From day one they have struck the wrong note and were on a confrontationist course with Ms Jayalaltiha, little realising that their campaign of falsehood failed to create any impact and was seen in its true colours by the people as well as the decisionmakers. By refusing to join hands with the Chief Minister, in spite of her repeated requests, when she presented her case to the Prime Minister they lost all legitimacy and the moral right to claim to be defenders of the Backward Classes. Their primary aim was to gain one up on Ms Jayalalitha and not their professed concern for the downtrodden. And in that game they have clearly been outsmarted. Though there can be no two opinions of Ms Jayalalitha’s concern for the Backward and Most Backward Classes, after this issue she has emerged their sole messiah.
