Chennai: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued its first flood warning to Tamilnadu government due to heavy rains in Karnataka and Kerala.

It said, “Since there was a likelihood of heavy release of water from the Kabini dam and Krishnarajasagar dam into river Cauvery, the combined discharge of more than one lakh cusecs (cubic feet per second) is expected to reach Mettur dam in Salem district within two days.”

The Mettur Dam will reach its full capacity of 120 feet in a few days if this continues, CWC said.

The officials also said that there is a possibility of heavy inflow into Hemavathy, Harangi, Kabini and Krishnarajasagar reservoirs of Karnataka for the next 36 hours.

So, alert has been sent to Tamilnadu Chief Secretary, Girija Vaidyanathan and District Collectors of Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem , Erode, Thanjavur and Tiruchy.

Dharmapuri district officials have already banned coracle services in Hoggenekal in view of the flood warning. Tourists have also been prohibited from taking bath in the falls.
