Chennai: Government Railway Police (GRP), gearing up to provide complete security for Tamilnadu railway stations in view of Independence Day being around the corner, have advised passengers to arrive well in advance at the stations to allow sufficient time for baggage scanning and vehicle checks.
A senior GRP official said about 1,500 personnel of the force will remain vigilant across all railway stations in the State for this Independence Day.
The vigil will start this evening and continue till 15 August midnight.
During the vigil, vehicles arriving at the station will be checked and baggage of all passengers will be scanned before allowing them to board the trains.
While GRP in Tamilnadu is classified into two divisions, about 800 police personnel would remain vigilant in the Chennai division of GRP, while 700 personnel will be vigilant in the Trichy division. A group of DSPs would monitor the personnel on duty.
Three-tier security will be provided for all the stations which includes posting personnel at the outer entrance of the railway station, inner entrance of the station and on platforms.
Dog squads will be employed to check compartments, said the official, who added that bomb squads will also be kept ready.
