Chennai: Ahead of Indian Independence Day, ‘News Today’ meets MRN Swamy, the son of freedom fighter and Congress leader MN Ramanna.
The resident of Choolaimedu High Road, in the city who fondly remembers his father, says,”We are basically from Karnataka. My father had participated in the ‘Quit India’ movement in the year 1942 and also in the protest for forming a responsible single government in Mysore which was under monarchy at that time.”
Ramanna had joined the Congress during the 1939 and was imprisoned in 1942 for his participation in ‘Quit India’ movement.
He also served as the Director of Mysore State Cooperative Apex Bank, Central Land Mortgage Bank, Mysore State Marketing society and President of District Cooperative Bank, Tumkur, it is learnt.
“My father remained with Karnataka Congress even after we got freedom. A lot of leaders used to visit our home quite often,” Swamy recollects.
Being the son of a freedom fighter, he has been actively involved in social activities for more than three decades now.
“My father is my inspiration. Like him, I cannot tolerate injustice and will raise my raise voice against it,” he concludes.
CM’S CONDOLENCE
Swamy shared a condolence message written by former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Ramakrishna Hegde, to his mother when his father passed away in 1989.
‘He was a dedicated social worker who worked for the upliftment of the poor in the field of co-operative sector. He has done a lot for the development of Tumkur district. He also devoted most of his time for the cause of Cooperative Movement in our State. I share your grief and may his soul rest in peace,’ the message read.
