Chennai: Tamilnadu government is fully prepared to face the upcoming northeast monsoon rains, said Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Special Programme Implementation Minister S P Velumani.
Speaking at a review meeting with the officials at Chennai Corporation’s Amma Maaligai on Tuesday regarding the rain preparedness, the Minister listed out various measures being taken. Here are they:
* In the extended areas of Chennai Corporation, government is planning to invest Rs 4,034 crore for constructing stormwater drains.
* In the first phase, Rs 1,323 crore has been sanctioned and works are on. Also, the 1,300 SWDs in the city are being desilted at the cost of Rs 20 crore.
*Over 446 machines, including underground sewage clearing machines, Jetronic machines, pump-sets, etc., have been kept ready.
* Officials concerned should make that all flood drainage passages like stormwater drains, canals, and natural water ways are desilted.
* Damaged water passages and bridges should be immediately restored.
* Works should be undertaken to connect all the SWDs which are disconnected.
* In flood prone places, all public buildings like marriage halls, community halls, schools, etc., should be kept ready for accommodation people during crisis.
* Generators and water pumps should be kept ready in low-lying areas so that in case of flooding the water can be pumped out from the spot and people be given power supply as soon as possible.
* Anti-infective chemicals like bleaching powder, chlorine, etc., should be kept ready with the deployment of doctors, nurses, and paramedical professionals.
* Earth-movers and cranes should be kept ready at all key roads so that the fallen trees and mud can be removed quickly.
* Workers should be prepared to restore public structures like roads, bridges, drains, street lamps that are damaged by the rains.
* All the blockages in water drains should be cleared as soon as possible.
