Vivekh, Jyothika appointed as TN plastic-free ambassadors

Chennai: Actor and social activist Vivekh has been appointed as ambassador for plastic free Tamilnadu campaign by the State government today.

Chief Minister K Edappadi K Palaniswami kicked off an awareness campaign in this regard at the Secretariat here today.

It may be recalled that Tamilnadu government announced recently that it would ban the use of plastic items, including non-biodegradable carry bags, from January 2019 to gift a plastic-free State to future generations.

A week ago, the Greater Chennai Corporation enforced a strict ban on plastic bags and other polymer-based items with a thickness of less than 40 microns.

To carry the message of plastic free Tamilnadu, Vivekh, actresses Jyothika and Sonia have been appointed ambassadors by State government. The Chief Minister also launched an app and a website to create more awareness.

Speaking on the occasion, Palaniswami, said,”For a healthy Tamilnadu, people should stop using plastic. People can use bags made of cloth or paper materials instead of plastic bags. The ambassadors for the campaign will strive to create more awareness among people.”

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidhyanathan were also present on the occasion.
