Chennai: In a bid to get the suburban area of Tambaram monsoon ready, residents and members of Sarvamangala Nagar in the locality have taken up several measures.
Speaking to News Today, M Ravi, a resident who has took up the initiative said,”The first step is to ensure that rainwater is not wasted and is used to replenish the groundwater. The water harvesting scheme, implemented a few years ago, has been forgotten by most people. We are now reminding them about it.”
He further said,”In many places, we have helped locals fix and repair the already existing harvesting pits. Seeing our work, people from other places have also sought our help and we have been flooded with requests. Though the work is hectic, we are happy that many want to save water.”
Residents also do door-to-door campaign, stressing on the importance of rainwater harvesting and the need to save the precious resource.
“There was a time when water was available at 40 feet in the locality, but now, there is no sign of it even after digging for 300 feet,” he added.
Another volunteer K Ramakrishna, said another major monsoon preparedness work is the cutting down of trees and branches that are in or nearing contact with EB lines.
“Though we are against cutting down of greenery, considering the amount of powercuts that happen during the monsoon season, we took precautionary measures to ensure that any branch that touches a live wire is cut. Residents have supported this move as well and with the help of EB officials, we have been progressing without any hindrance,” he stated.
He also said,”Apart from this, we will also be holding the association’s general body meeting on 9 September at 4 pm at the park here, during which several key issues will be discussed.”
