Chennai: Mandaveli is a major residential-cum-commercial neighbourhood. Naturally, it overflows with high volumes of traffic. Residents are worrying about the traffic regulation, especially Devanathan Street and the roads that lead to Mandaveli bus terminus.
Four years ago, a gruesome accident on Devanathan Street leading to the death of a teenage girl left the residents in shock.
“After the accident, the street was made one-way lane for traffic,” says Latha. “But now, one can see two-wheelers and even autos and cars plying on both ways, rarely slowing down. Pedestrians have to be more than doubly careful while walking on Devanathan Street and on all the four roads that surround the Mandaveli bus terminus,” she said.
She adds that two-wheelers also make their way through Mandaveli bus terminus at full speed. “There is a faded board hanging at one of the gates warning against this violation with severe punishment but no one cares,” adds Latha.
The streets are also said to be devoid of proper platforms. “In a few places where platforms exist, all kinds of objects, big and small, can be found, leaving no room for pedestrians to walk on them,” she says.
“It is a common sight to see two-wheelers speeding on these pedestrian platforms,” she adds.
There are several clinics and health centres and patients who visit these medical practitioners invariably park their vehicles outside, causing more traffic jams. Latha requests the authorities to do something to make the streets safer for residents.
