Chennai: DMK president M K Stalin today visited Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and extended birthday wishes to her. He also invited her for a grand event organised on 16 December at Anna Arivalayam, here, to unveil the statue of former State Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.The DMK chief will also take part in a meeting of opposition parties to be chaired by Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the national capital, today.
Stalin today left Chennai by flight. At 11.30 am, he met Sonia Gandhi at her residence. He presented her a bouquet and extended her, his birthday greetings. He formally invited her to attend Karunanidhi statue unveiling event in Chennai on 16 December. During the meeting with her, Stalin also discussed about the present political situation in Tamilnadu and about the alliance for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Sources say that Stalin and Sonia spoke in brief about the Mekedatu issue, since Congress is part of the ruling government in Karnataka. He also placed some requests over the issue to Sonia Gandhi.
A grand meeting of opposition parties will take place in Delhi today. It will be attended by leaders of Congress, Indian Communist, Marxist Communist, Trinamool Congress and Telugu Desam, among others. Stalin will take part in the meet on behalf of the DMK.
It is expected that the opposition parties will formulate strategies to face the forthcoming Parliamentary elections at the meet.
Earlier addressing media persons at Chennai airport, Stalin, said, “(I) will be meeting Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi to invite her formally for the mega event in Chennai. If Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy attends the opposition parties meeting, I will raise the Mekedatu issue to him.”
