Chennai: Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University Vice-Chancellor, Dr S Geethalakshmi, said the burden of sleep disorders in the community was high and it lead to considerable clinical distress and loss of economic productivity.
She was speaking at the sleep disorder workshop and symposium, ‘Sleepless in Chennai’, organised by Buddhi Clinic. Geethalakshmi said it was the high index of clinical suspicion among doctors that will lead to early diagnosis.
“While modern technology has resulted in a number of robust therapeutic solutions, the role of traditional, natural and holistic treatments cannot but be underscored,” she said.
Psychological health is also an important causative factor of ‘sleeplessness’ she remarked, calling for public awareness about insomnia, mental health and the role of integrative medicine.
International sleep expert from Singapore, Tripat Deep Singh, pointed out that snoring was not really a sign of good sleep and may be the hallmark of underlying sleep apnoea.
“In this condition, patients have periods of loud snoring interrupted by episodes of breathing cessation,” he said.
Untreated obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can lead to hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, stroke, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias and sudden death, warned the expert, who teaches sleep courses around the world to doctors and other healthcare professionals.
Buddhi Clinic founder Ennapadam S Krishnamoorthy said India had a long tradition of unique medical systems like Ayurveda and yoga, and of person-centered care. “Integrating the best of modern science with the wisdom of ancient traditions as an integrated care solution was the Buddhi Clinic innovation,” he said.
