Chennai: An elderly woman died this morning after an MTC bus collided with the call taxi she was travelling in near Anna Square.
According to the police, MTC bus route No. 109 was proceeding from Kovalam to Broadway this morning around 10.30 when it tried to overtake another bus in front of it near Anna Square. But the bus collided head on with a call taxi coming in the opposite direction.
In the impact, the car was crushed beyond recognition. Car driver Venkatesan and passengers, Hemavathy (70) and her granddaughter Anandhi (29) got caught inside the crumpled car.
Anna Square inspector Kausalya led a police team to the spot and organised to free the three victims from the mangled car.
Though the three were rushed to the government hospital for treatment, Hemavathy died. The other two were grievously injured and are undergoing treatment.
The police have detained MTC bus driver, Rajendran from Villupuram, and are investigating.
