“Classical music not only entertains but helps in connecting generations and spreads spirituality and desa bhakti,” said R Seshasayee, independent director of Asian Paints Ltd, after inaugurating the 63rd Margazhi Mela and 38th Natya Kala Conference at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha yesterday.
Seshayee cautioned about misusing the art forms for negative activities like dividing people through religions and also claiming ownership rights.
Highlight of the event was Vyjayanthi Kashi (Bharatanatyam exponent) being presented ‘Nritya Choodamani’ award and ‘Acharya Choodamani’ to Sadanam Balakrishnan (Kathakali exponent).
Former Member Secretary of Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram, Chitra Visweswaran was the guest of honour. She felicitated the awardees. Thanking the sabha for the honour, Vyjanthi Kashi said, “I am delighted to receive the award and motivated to teach Kuchipudi to younger generations.”
On his part, Sadanam Balakrishnan pointed out the award given to him is for the age old art Kathakali which needs more support and attention.
Notable among those present include the sabha president Dr Nalli Kuppuswami Chetty, secretary Y Prabhu. Saswathi Prabhu compiled the programme.
The festival goes on till 3 January with variety of programmes to be held at Dr Nalli Gana Vihar and Kamakoti Hall situated within the sabha presmies.
