Chandrababu Naidu

Amaravati: Chandrababu Naidu government faced the heat from Opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh after it made a decision to allot five per cent reservation for upper caste Kapus out of the 10 per cent quota for economically weaker sections.

Naidu made the announcement today during a teleconference with his Telugu Desam Party leaders in Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister’s act was termed as an election gimmick by the opposition parties.

According to sources, even the upper caste Kapu community has criticised this decision as it may lead to problems between communities. The Kapunadu leader S Sunkara said Kapu community did not require a quota-in-quota. It will only cause a strife between various communities and will also not be legally tenable. He added that Naidu should keep his promise of including the Kapus in the BC list.

YSR Congress, the main opposition, said that Naidu’s decision was an election gimmick and aimed at hoodwinking the Kapu community. Meanwhile, the BJP accused the Chief Minister of trying to create a discord between communities.

BJP state president Kanna Lakshminarayana said Naidu had promised a lot of things ahead of the 2014 elections and did not honour those promises. He further demanded that Naidu should prove his sincerity by getting the Valmiki-Boya community in the ST list and the washermen community in the SC list.
