The construction site of the sub-station on Munusamy Salai, K K Nagar, is covered with tin sheets.

The construction work of a new sub-station on Munusamy Salai, K K Nagar, Chennai, has commenced.

“As load capacity is expected to increase in the coming years, an additional sub-station to cater to K K Nagar and Nesapakkam was initiated. Hence, TANGEDCO decided to come up with a 110 kv sub-station on Munusamy Salai. It will take 15 months for completion,” said an official.

At present, there are three sub-stations at K K Nagar. They include one on Anna Main Road, Ramasamy Salai and P T Rajan Salai.

In 2014, TANGEDCO had acquired land from TNHB to construct a new sub-station. Four ration shops that were functioning on the premises were shifted to other places nearby.

“The new sub-station will cater to all sectors in K K Nagar and Nesapakkam. Every year, there used to be an increase in power consumption. Hence, a new sub-station is needed to meet the capacity. Once, the sub-station on Munusamy Salai is completed, there would be no power shortage,” the official said.

With summer heat already being felt now, many households are running ACs at night. Asked about how TANGEDCO is going to handle the situation, the officials said, “We have enough power capacity to meet the demand this year.”
K K Nagar residents have welcomed the new sub-station and thanked the authorities.

The third sub-station was opened in 2014 on P T Rajan Salai. Apart from Ashok Nagar, the sub-station caters partially to residents of Kodambakkam and West Mambalam. Earlier, electricity was supplied to all the three places from the sub-stations functioning on Anna Main Road and Ramasamy Salai.

The sub-station on P T Rajan Salai, also has a collection centre to pay electricity bills and 24/7 fuse off call centre to address complaints.
