A group of people adorned with clothes that normally would not be taken out of the wardrobe would lead one to believe that there is a marriage going on. But what if the group enters a school? Wait, child marriage is prohibited in the country right?
News Today encountered this and went head on to speak with the school authorities to know what’s what. The school in question is the Municipal Union Primary school at Vembuli Amman Kovil Street in Madipakkam and the group that entered the school were parents and alumni who had come to hand over kalvi seervarisai.
Asked about the need for such an event in the first place, Headmistress at the school, Sofia, said, “About a month ago, we received an order from the School Education Department instructing us to carry out necessary developments in the school premises. We convened the school management committee (SMC) in which parents are also acting members.”
At the meet, it was decided that funds will be collected to carry out the works at the school. “Parents and even the school alumni came together and campaigned for the same. They collected over Rs 2 lakh and then we listed out the things that need to be brought, after taking a survey of the premises,” said the Headmistress.
The school offers education for classes I to V in both Tamil and English medium. Students are also trained in vocational programmes, art, music and karate, according to the HM.
At the ‘Kalvi Seer Vazhangum Vizha’ that took place last week, an LED television, a projector, three wardrobes, 100 steel plates, apart from others, were donated.
“I felt happy the moment I saw parents entering the school in attire that people normally wear at weddings. They not only collected cash, but also donated it in a proper manner. It was heartwarming,” added Sofia.
Asked if those things that were given have already been put to use, Sofia answered in the negative. She said, “We didn’t put them to use, since, Election Commission officials asked us to clear the premises for now, ahead of Lok Sabha polls.
Once the election is over, we will use them.”
In total, over 60 parents including school alumini attended the event and along with them government officials and members of SMC took part.
