Tamil New Year is one day to rejoice for all Tamils across the globe for the day keeps them tied to the tradition that many say dates back many millenia.

News Today met with members of welfare associations, temples and even residents across the city to know their plans for the day.

As usual, arrangements have been made at temples for special abishegams followed by annadhanam. “We have planned a special abishegam to Lord Ganesh at 7.30 am and new vastrams for all sannadhis. Also, panchanga padalam will happen at 4 pm in the temple premises. Following that will be Santhana Kaapu and Deeparathana for the deity,” said, Mani from Siva Vishnu Kovil, Madipakkam.

Kannan, a resident of T Nagar, says, “We will be visiting nearby temples, do poojas at home and visit important places in the city. We are also planning to go out for a movie, since the day falls on a weekend.”

“Usually, I spend the day at home as I do every year. I have no plans, since it’s not another Deepavali or Pongal. But sometimes, I think of celebrating the day differently, either by visiting some Tamil sangams and the like. Due to my hectic work schedule and commitments, I regret that I am not able to do those things,” said Sugumaran, who lives in Pallavaram.

Special poojas and panchaka patanam are being organised at many places of worship. All arrangements are made for devotees to visit Vadapalani Murugan temple, TTD Venkatachalapathy temple and Besant Nagar Ashtalakshmi temple on New Year day to offer prayers.

Like every year, panchanga reading for the new year will take place at Sankara Maths (Kanchi and Sringeri), Ayodhya Mandapam, and Shirdi Sai Baba temple, West Mambalam and also at shrines like SringeriMath, Siva Vishnu temple in T Nagar, on 14 April.

Also, Tamizh Nadu Brahmins’ Association, Bazullah Road, will release the new year panchangam on 14 April at 6.30 pm in its premises. A press release said, association state president Thiruvottiyur N Narayanan will release the first copy and Palakkad KV Ramani Sastrigal will read out the patanam and forecast for all 12 raasis in the horoscope.

On Tamil New Year Day, Anna Nagar Ayyappan temple will open at 4.30 am. There will be Ganapathi Homam and special abhishekam to Lord Ayyappa. Prasadam will be distributed to all devotees who come for darshan on the auspicious day.
