Chennai: The stretch on Arcot Road between the junction of the police station and a private school was made two-way around two years ago to regulate traffic flow. In contrast, the traffic in the area is deteriorating.
Harish Chandra, a resident of Arcot Road, said, “There is no policeman in the junction to regulate traffic and this is the main cause for chaos. Earlier, there were two policemen to check traffic violations around Saraswathi Vidyalaya.”
He also said, “Pedestrians and school children are the worst affected. Earlier, pedestrians were allowed to cross at select places on the stretch between the junction and the school. Stating that this led to traffic congestion, the spots were closed. Now, pedestrians have only option to cross near the school.”
Narayanan, a regular on Arcot Road, said, “The most common traffic violation at this junction is caused by motorists coming from the temple street. They take a ‘U’ turn at the school point, especially during busy hours. Traffic policemen are not present at this junction and the situation gets worse.”
Residents in and around the school request the traffic department to take necessary action to streamline vehicles.
When contacted, traffic policemen present at the location said, “Police personnel from the nearby police station were roped in to regulate the traffic in this area and the process is under way to allot two policemen near the school junction.”
