Chennai: In what has come as good news to suburban residents, the World Bank has allocated funds for cleaning the Pallavaram Periya Eri, located along the Pallavaram- Thoraipakkam Radial Road, with restoration works underway in full swing.
According to World Bank’s report, “The ecological survey shows that seasonal, local varieties of flora and fauna have been found in and around Pallavaram Periya lake.
While the dominant species outside the lake boundary are mainly local grasses and Prosopis, aquatic weed infestation is observable in the lake. Bund area has few palm trees. Due to sewage inflow, biodiversity is restricted to weeds. As part of the de-silting process, weeds have to be removed from here.”
It is said that works include strengthening of bund, construction of peripheral drain for a length of 1813 metres, construction of two regulators/ overflow weirs, cleaning and de-silting the tank, chain link fencing with erection of boundary pillars and construction of walkway for 950 metres on the tank bund for a width of 2.5 metres.
The duration of the project is 18 months and will be carried out in a single phase, it is learnt.
Also, to protect the tank from misuse, chain link fencing with erection of RCC pillars has been proposed. This would be constructed after the completion of the de-silting process.
