Chennai: Tension prevailed in Coimbatore after unidentified persons hurled a petrol bomb at a mosque on Sanganoor Road during the wee hours of today.
According to sources, the petrol bomb was thrown into the mosque premises located in Vedammal Nagar at 1 am. However, the bomb did not go off. Police found shattered glass pieces of the bottle with a wick and petrol spilled on the ground from the spot this morning.
Following this, police security was heightened across the city. Members of Muslim organsitions met City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan and asked for security at mosques in the district.
Representatives of Coimbatore North District All Jaamat filed a petition asking for immediate action against the miscreants.
Sharan said in a press release, “I hereby direct all assemblies, processions, fasts, demonstrations, assembling for distribution of pamphlets, pasting of wall posters, wall writings, erection of flex boards in any street, road, thoroughfares or other public places shall be regulated within Coimbatore City Police jurisdiction for a period of 15 days commencing from midnight on 4 March and ending with midnight on 18 March. However, intending applicants are advised to apply for grant of permission, at least five days in advance”.
Yesterday, a Hindu Munnani activist was attack by unidentified persons while he was heading home on a two-wheeler after a pro-CAA demonstration.
The victim, Anand, was riding a two-wheeler along with a friend, they were stopped by unidentified persons at Nanjundapuram. While the friend escaped from the gang, Anand was beaten with an iron rod.
He is undergoing treatment at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. Thousands had gathered outside the hospital today. This morning, Hindu Munnani leaders while addressing the media called for a bandh tomorrow.
