Chennai: The government has asked Wikipedia to remove a link from its platform that has shown an incorrect map of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to sources, the issue was brought to light by a Twitter user, Chhatrasal Singh, who highlighted that the Wikipedia page on India-Bhutan relationship had incorrectly depicted the map of Jammu Kashmir.
A map here reportedly shows Aksai Chin, as a part of China.
Taking cognisance of the matter, the ministry issued an order on 27 November, 2020 directing Wikipedia to remove the map as it violated the territorial integrity and sovereignty of India.
The order was issued under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, it is said.
āIf Wikipedia does not abide by the same, the government can take legal action against the company, including blocking access to the entire platformā, sources added, as officials are of the view that the content posted on the website is done with the intent to ādefameā the country and has the āpotential to disturb the sovereignty and harmony of the nationā.
Last month, the government had issued a similar notice to microblogging platform Twitter for showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir instead of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
