Chennai: Even as many areas of Chennai remain flooded, weather experts have said various parts of Tamilnadu will continue to receive downpour till 2 December. However, the intense rain may take a break from tomorrow and decrease gradually.
Amid continued heavy rainfall inundating roads in several areas of capital Chennai, Tamilnadu government has announced a holiday in schools and colleges in Chennai and 10 other districts for today.
Many districts in the state got a respite from rains today amid a ‘very heavy’ rain forecast. State revenue and disaster management minister KKSSR Ramachandran had informed a total of eight people have died due to heavy rainfall in the State.
Water from the Padur lake ran over OMR from west to east, slowing down traffic, while Semmencherry was waterlogged and motorists took the service road. The stretch near Kelambakkam came under a thick sheet of water.
Social media platforms were flooded with videos of OMR turning into a stream and part of the bridge near Kelambakkam developing cracks.
Officials of the India Meteorological Department said that while the easterlies over the coastal areas would push moisture into the land, the moving weather system would bring in south-westerly winds.
Chief Minister M K Stalin inspected several flooded suburban areas like Tiruverkadu in Tiruvallur District and monitored work to bail out flood water and interacted with the local people while sipping tea at a roadside tea stall and also listened to their grievances.
