Chennai : An Indian student has been hospitalised after he was shot with a bullet in Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine. His identity is not immediately known.
Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation General VK Singh revealed the information at Poland’s Rzeszow airport.
‘I received info today that a student coming from Kyiv got shot and was taken back midway. We’re trying for maximum evacuation in minimum loss,’ he said.
‘The Indian embassy had earlier cleared on the priority that everyone should leave Kyiv. In the event of war, the gun bullet does not look at anyone’s religion and nationality,’ he added.
In an earlier incident, an Indian student was killed in shelling in Kharkiv. Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar, a fourth-year MBBS student at Kharkiv National Medical University was struck by a Russian rocket when he had stepped out to buy food.
Meanwhile, in north-eastern Ukraine’s Sumy, around 60 kilometres from Russia, stranded Indian students are sending SOS messages, seeking evacuation, amid increasing airstrikes.
Around 700 Indian students have been stranded in Sumy and have been making repeated appeals for evacuations.
In the meantime, the Indian government has intensified its evacuation measures and more flights are being deployed to bring back students and Indian nationals from the war-hit country.
A large number of Indian students continue to remain hostage in a train station in Kharkiv, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday evening. The Russian leader’s comments came hours after India said that its plans to evacuate nationals from the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv were disrupted as fighting in the city had resumed after a brief pause during Wednesday.
