Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the father of India’s Green Revolution, passed away here this morning. He was a pioneering agricultural scientist whose work has had a profound impact on India’s food security and agricultural development.

Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Dr Swaminathan dedicated his life to improving the lives of Indian farmers and ensuring food sufficiency for the nation. His visionary research and advocacy for modern agricultural practices transformed India from a food-deficit nation to a self-sufficient one.

Dr. Swaminathan’s tireless efforts in the field of agriculture led to the widespread adoption of high-yielding crop varieties, improved irrigation techniques, and sustainable farming practices. His contributions not only increased agricultural productivity but also alleviated poverty and hunger for millions of people.

Throughout his illustrious career, he received numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, and the World Food Prize for his exceptional contributions to agriculture and food security.

He has also received the World Food Prize for his work in improving food production and security in developing countries.
