TN aims to regain wind energy leadership with policy Incentives

Tamil Nadu, a pioneering state in the field of renewable energy, is resolutely working to reclaim its position as the leading state in wind energy. This ambitious goal is being pursued with a series of policy incentives and strategic measures, as articulated by Rajesh Lakhoni, the Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd. (TANGEDCO).

Speaking at the Windergy India 2023 trade fair and conference in Chennai, Lakhoni acknowledged that Gujarat had overtaken Tamil Nadu in terms of installed wind power capacity by several hundred megawatts. However, he underscored Tamil Nadu’s unique advantage – a consistent supply of wind power for three to four months each year, rendering it available round the clock.

Tamil Nadu’s commitment to wind energy is underscored by several key factors:

Historical Pioneering: Tamil Nadu has a history of being a pioneer in wind energy. The state was among the first in India to harness the power of the wind, and it has a well-established infrastructure for wind energy generation.

Policy Incentives: Tamil Nadu’s government has been proactive in providing policy incentives to encourage wind energy projects. These incentives include favorable tariffs, tax benefits, and streamlined approval processes, making it an attractive destination for wind power investments.

Geographic Advantage: The state’s strategic location along the coastline exposes it to strong and consistent wind patterns, particularly during certain months of the year. This consistent wind resource makes it possible to generate wind power round the clock, ensuring a reliable energy supply.

Environmental Benefits: Wind energy aligns with Tamil Nadu’s commitment to environmental sustainability. By focusing on renewable energy sources like wind, the state can reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.

Economic Growth: A renewed emphasis on wind energy not only aligns with environmental goals but also contributes to economic growth. Wind energy projects create jobs and stimulate local economies, furthering the state’s development objectives.
