Madras High Court has granted interim bail to SA Basha, the convict and founder of Al-Ummah, a banned Muslim terrorist organization, on medical grounds. Basha, who was involved in the Coimbatore bomb blast of 1998, was seeking bail based on his deteriorating health conditions and a plea for premature release. The case was heard before a division bench of the Madras High Court, comprising Justice SS Sundar and Justice Sunder Mohan. SA Basha was originally arrested for his alleged role as the mastermind behind the Coimbatore bomb blast, which was a sinister plot aimed at assassinating BJP leader LK Advani during an election campaign held in Coimbatore. This incident, which occurred in 1998, was a significant and tragic event in Indian history. The counsel representing SA Basha argued that he had completed the sentence imposed for his involvement in the Coimbatore bomb blast. Furthermore, it was highlighted that Basha’s health had significantly deteriorated, and he required urgent medical attention. Given his advanced age and the severity of his medical complications, the counsel sought interim bail for him. The Additional Public Prosecutor, E Raj Thilak, representing the State, stated that the government had no objection to granting interim bail in light of Basha’s medical condition. After considering the arguments presented by both sides, the division bench of the Madras High Court decided to grant interim bail to SA Basha on medical grounds. The court also directed the State to respond to the petition, indicating that the matter would be further examined.
