Why Dhoni chose to step down as CSK skipper?

The announcement of Ruturaj Gaikwad as the new captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the upcoming IPL season has sparked curiosity and speculation about the reasons behind MS Dhoni relinquishing the captaincy role. This move marks the second time in the last three seasons that CSK has named a new captain on the eve of a season opener, following Ravindra Jadeja taking over from Dhoni in 2022.
In 2022, the transition to Jadeja as captain wasn’t entirely smooth, with CSK struggling with six losses in their first eight games. Midway through the season, Jadeja stepped down, and Dhoni resumed leadership duties, ultimately guiding CSK to their fifth IPL title in 2023, equalling Mumbai Indians’ record.
Reflecting on the captaincy switch in 2022, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged that it served as a wake-up call for the franchise. He emphasized the importance of being prepared for Dhoni’s eventual departure and building for the future. Fleming highlighted the need to learn from past mistakes and ensure transparency and readiness within the leadership group.
Fleming also hinted at the possibility of on-field mentorship from Dhoni and other senior players to assist Gaikwad in transitioning into the captaincy role. Gaikwad, at 27 years old, will become only the third player other than Dhoni to lead CSK in the IPL. Despite his relatively young age, Gaikwad brings leadership experience from captaining Maharashtra in 13 T20 matches and leading India in three T20Is during the Asian Games, where they clinched the gold medal.
The decision to appoint Gaikwad as captain signals CSK’s commitment to nurturing young talent and planning for the future, says CSK fan Sadiq.
Echoing the same, a local cricketer Arun says, ‘With Dhoni’s legacy firmly established, the focus now shifts to grooming the next generation of leaders and maintaining CSK’s competitive edge in the IPL.’
