AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has raised concerns over the recent multi-fold increase in stamp duty for several transactions, labeling it as “anti-people” and calling for immediate action from the state government to revoke the decision. In a statement issued on Sunday, Palaniswami criticized the hike in stamp duty, highlighting its adverse impact on various transactions. He pointed out that the increase affects 26 services, including adoption, partnership agreements, power of attorney documents, and property transaction registrations, with costs soaring up to 10 to 33 times higher than previous rates.
Palaniswami emphasized that during his tenure as the head of the previous AIADMK government, measures were taken to alleviate the financial burden on the people, with responsible management of funds and appropriate utilization of loans for capital expenditure. He contrasted this with the current DMK government’s approach, accusing it of mismanagement across various departments, leading to adverse effects on the state’s economy.
Expressing condemnation for the government’s decision to impose higher taxes and charges, Palaniswami urged the state administration to reconsider its stance and withdraw the recent hike in stamp duty. He also highlighted the need for the government to adhere to the Madras High Court’s order regarding the revision of guideline values, which the DMK government has reportedly not yet implemented.
Palaniswami underscored the importance of addressing the concerns raised by the public and ensuring that government policies and decisions do not unduly burden the citizens. He urged the government to prioritize the welfare of the people and take necessary steps to alleviate their financial strain, especially during challenging times.
