Chennai, May 2:

A key accused in the murder of K Armstrong, former Tamil Nadu unit president of the Bahujan Samaj Party, was arrested at Bengaluru International Airport while attempting to flee abroad and brought to Chennai on Friday.

Police said the accused, Aswathaman—son of history-sheeter Nagendran—was intercepted by immigration authorities minutes before boarding a Bangkok flight, based on a Lookout Circular.

A special team of the Greater Chennai Police secured his custody and brought him to the city after obtaining a transit warrant. Officials said no fresh case has been registered yet, but legal opinion is being sought on whether he violated bail conditions, with plans to move the Supreme Court for cancellation of his bail.

Armstrong was murdered on July 5, 2024, by an armed gang in Perambur, triggering widespread outrage. The Madras High Court had cancelled bail granted to key accused earlier this year, leading to their re-arrest.

The case, which saw the arrest of 26 individuals, including political functionaries, was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, though the order was stayed by the Supreme Court.
