Chennai: CMRL is set to introduce driverless metro rail services in the near future, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transportation infrastructure.
Despite the various transportation options available in Chennai, the suburban rail service remains crucial to the daily lives of its residents. Every day, hundreds of thousands of people rely on the suburban trains for their commuting needs.
With the increasing number of passengers using public transportation, the Chennai Metro Rail has become a vital solution for easing the city’s traffic woes. In this context, the second phase of the metro rail project will soon see the introduction of driverless trains. A total of 62 trains are being manufactured in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh, to facilitate this upgrade.
As part of this initiative, the first driverless metro train, consisting of three coaches, is set to arrive in Chennai next month. According to Metro Rail officials, this train is specifically designed to operate on the second phase routes of the Chennai Metro without a driver.
The train, equipped with fully air-conditioned coaches, will be housed at the depot in Poonamallee upon arrival. It will then be handed over to the Metro Rail authorities for further procedures. Designed to travel at a speed of up to 80 km/h, the train can comfortably accommodate around 1,000 passengers.
