Chennai: In a significant operation, the Tamil Nadu Department of Food Safety on Tuesday confiscated 1,600 kg of stale mutton that had been transported by train to Chennai. According to a report by Daily Thanthi, the meat was brought by a man named Sikander from Jaipur and arrived at the Egmore railway station. The inspection team, led by Food Safety Officer Sathish, discovered that the goat had been slaughtered five days ago. The meat was reportedly intended for distribution to various restaurants across Chennai. The delayed transportation and lack of proper preservation raised concerns about the quality and safety of the meat.
The sale of unhygienic and stale mutton has been a growing issue in various parts of Chennai. Unscrupulous vendors often sell meat that has been stored for long periods without proper refrigeration, leading to the growth of harmful bacteria. Consuming such meat can lead to severe food poisoning, gastrointestinal infections, and other health complications.
The seizure highlights the ongoing dangers posed by the sale of substandard meat products in the city. The Department of Food Safety has urged consumers to be vigilant and ensure they purchase meat from reputable sources. Authorities have also vowed to increase inspections and crack down on the illegal sale of unhygienic meat to protect public health.
