BJP Tamil Nadu State President Annamalai has raised concerns about a new electricity billing system that has reportedly been implemented in the state this month. In a statement shared on his official social media page, Annamalai pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has introduced a new method of calculating electricity charges. According to reports, if a household or commercial establishment has two electricity connections, they will now be consolidated into a single connection, and the electricity bill will be calculated accordingly.
However, Annamalai highlighted that there is a lack of clarity on how this new system will impact tenants. It remains unclear whether the two electricity connections will be combined based on the name or the address of the property. This raises concerns about whether tenants may end up having to pay for electricity that should otherwise be covered under the 100-unit free electricity scheme.
Annamalai also criticized the ruling DMK government, pointing out that despite their election promise to implement monthly electricity billing, they have failed to do so even after three years in power. Instead, the government has introduced new billing systems that impose additional burdens on the public.
Currently, electricity bills are calculated every two months, leading to a 50% increase in charges for many consumers. The lack of transparency in the new billing method is causing further confusion among the public, who fear they may face even higher electricity costs under this system. Annamalai emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Tamil Nadu government to provide clarity on these issues.
Annamalai urged the state government to address the concerns surrounding this new billing system and ensure that the public is not unfairly burdened by these changes.
