Across Chennai, a new trend is gaining momentum as porridge shops are popping up near walking paths, catering to the health-conscious morning walkers. These affordable porridge stalls offer a range of nutritious drinks, appealing to fitness enthusiasts who are looking for a wholesome post-walk refreshment.
Typically made from ingredients like millets, ragi (finger millet), oats, and other traditional grains, these porridge drinks are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making them a favorite for those looking to maintain or improve their health.
“After my morning walk, I make it a point to stop at the porridge shop. It’s refreshing, and I know I’m consuming something healthy and filling. It gives me energy without being heavy,” says Radha Krishnan, a regular walker at Anna Nagar Tower Park.
Porridge has long been considered a staple in traditional South Indian diets, known for its numerous health benefits. Rich in protein, calcium, and essential nutrients, it aids in digestion, helps regulate blood sugar, and promotes heart health. Its recent revival in urban spaces highlights a shift towards natural, affordable nutrition options.
“People are becoming more aware of the importance of consuming clean and natural foods. Porridge, made from millets or ragi, is a superfood that keeps you full and nourished. We see a lot of repeat customers who swear by its benefits,” says Sundar, the owner of a porridge stall near Marina Beach.
The affordability of these porridge drinks also adds to their appeal. With prices ranging from ₹20 to ₹40 per cup, it’s an accessible option for people from all walks of life. The simplicity of the preparation, often without any additives or sugar, ensures that it remains a healthy alternative to more commercial beverages.
Ravi, another regular at the porridge shop near Natesan Park, shares, “I’ve been a morning walker for years, and discovering this shop was a blessing. It’s a great way to recover after the walk and keep myself hydrated and energized.”
With the increasing demand for healthy, convenient, and affordable food options, porridge stalls are becoming a regular feature around Chennai’s parks and walking paths, serving as both a reminder of traditional Indian food wisdom and a solution for modern health-conscious lifestyles.
