As Cyclone Fengal intensifies, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert warning for extremely heavy rainfall across seven coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu. The alert, which remains in effect on Saturday, signals the potential for severe weather conditions, with heavy rains expected to continue throughout the day.

The state has already been grappling with the effects of Cyclone Fengal since Friday night, as the cyclone’s outer bands began to bring torrential rainfall to the region. Chennai and its neighboring districts have felt the brunt of the storm, with several areas experiencing intense downpours that have led to significant waterlogging.

In Chennai, localities such as Velachery, Madipakkam, Alandur, Porur, Egmore, Anna Salai, Manali, and Ennore have seen particularly heavy spells of rain. These areas have faced disruptions as a result of the rains, with roads submerged in water and traffic snarls becoming commonplace. The waterlogging has also affected daily life, leaving residents stranded and causing delays for commuters.

The storm’s impact has extended beyond the capital, affecting nearby towns and villages in the southern and northern parts of the state. Authorities have advised people in these areas to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert for further updates. Coastal regions are at a higher risk of flooding due to the combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Fishermen have been urged to stay off the seas as the cyclone’s influence brings strong winds and rough seas along the coast. Tamil Nadu’s coastal regions are no strangers to such severe weather events, and authorities have been working to ensure that emergency response measures are in place.

The Tamil Nadu government has mobilized disaster relief teams, and emergency services are on high alert to respond to any potential evacuations or relief efforts needed. Schools and colleges in the affected areas have been asked to suspend classes for the day to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Cyclone Fengal is expected to weaken over the coming days, but its impact is likely to linger, particularly in terms of rainfall and localized flooding. With more heavy rain predicted, the state is preparing for possible disruptions to power supply, transportation, and daily life.

As Cyclone Fengal continues to make its way through Tamil Nadu, residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and follow all safety instructions issued by the authorities. With the worst of the storm expected to hit today, precautions and preparedness will be key to minimizing the impact of this intense weather event.
