The 48th edition of the Chennai Book Fair, a highly anticipated event for book enthusiasts, officially kicked off on Friday evening at the Nandanam YMCA grounds. This 18-day literary extravaganza is set to captivate book lovers of all ages and promises a memorable experience for visitors.
The fair was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, accompanied by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Health Minister Ma Subramanian, and Chennai Mayor R Priya. Organised by the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), the Chennai Book Fair has earned its reputation as one of the largest and most beloved book fairs in the country.
This year’s edition boasts an impressive 900 stalls, offering a vast collection of books spanning various genres, languages, and categories. The fair presents an opportunity for readers to explore everything from academic texts to fiction, non-fiction, and children’s books. To enhance the appeal of the event, organisers have announced a 10% discount on all books sold at the fair. Additionally, special discounts will be available for school and college libraries to encourage reading habits among students.
A notable feature of this year’s fair is the participation of 10 government departments, including the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation. These departments are offering access to government publications and resources, with the HR&CE department making its debut at the event to promote cultural and religious literature.
In addition to the book displays, the fair will host a variety of engaging events designed to foster creativity and critical thinking, particularly among young minds. These events include drawing and speech competitions for school students, as well as daily art programs that will showcase Chennai’s vibrant cultural scene.
The Chennai Book Fair will also recognize outstanding contributions to literature and publishing with the Muthamizharinagar Kalaignar Gold Awards, which will be presented to six distinguished individuals. Additionally, 10 Bapasi awards will be presented at the closing ceremony by the Deputy Chief Minister.
The organisers have made extensive arrangements to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors. Parking facilities have been set up to accommodate around 15,000 cars and over 50,000 two-wheelers, making it convenient for attendees to access the event.
The fair will be open to the public from 2 pm to 8:30 pm on weekdays and from 11 am to 8:30 pm on holidays, offering plenty of time for visitors to explore the vast collection of books and partake in the exciting activities planned throughout the event.
The Chennai Book Fair 2024 promises to be an enriching and immersive experience for all, providing a platform to celebrate the joy of reading and promote literacy in the region.
